Op amps have practically infinite CMR at low frequencies, where the cap multiplier’s vague idea of an output voltage occurs, but are really horrible up in the tens to hundreds of kHz, where a good cap multiplier is like a brick wall. I’ll try a few ohms in the output of the regs, add filtering to each critical IC’s power, and relax.
In this video I am assembling a multiple fixed rail power supply kit.
I must the only person around who doesn’t know what a cap multipler is. If I were to guess I would say you need to run these at less than 50 degrees C to get some decent life out of them.
Regulators have an inductive output characteristic, which wants to resonate with the output capacitor. My kit was missing 1 small heatsink and one of the electrolytics was a different value than specified on the PCB. You will see a teardown as well as various tests performed on this power supply. There was a mention of a stress test in a datasheet and that meant for that particular led manufacturer running it at 60 degrees C full rated current for hours with no resulting damage.
I also reverse engineered and got a schematic of this kit which I am showing towards the end of the video. Two pole multipliers are better. John Or else use higher beta transistors that let jack up the resistor and use ceramics.

Previous page Page 1 Datashedt 2. Or is it random noise? This power supply works with a V input either through a USB mini socket or a dc barrel jack 2. I’m a little confused about what the problem is, but if you are trying to reduce power supply noise, then I’d put the cap-multipliers after the voltage regualtors.
As usual with these lcd monitors, datashset fault is caused by capacitors on the power supply board.
Gopher has addressed some of the issues I found in the old revision and sent me their latest for review. Is the ‘ripple’ synchronous with the signal you are amplifying? A low-ohm resistor in series with the output will de-Q the resonance, and can sometimes help a lot.
How about a schematic? Will it work at first power on? Your feedback has helped me calm down a lot. And another on the c-mult output gobbles up residual feedthrough. I’ve dqtasheet an analogue circuit with a gain of a few thousand. Thank you for the replies. I’ve noticed that there are some expensive regulators touted as “fast transient response” around, do people find these significantly reduce supply ripple, i.
I thought I was seeing some subtle and major gotcha, but your comments have helped me get this in perspective. Watch the video and see how I got myself into trouble. Ask a question – edaboard.
Are fast transient response regulators worth using?
On Wed, 02 Feb I will be posting an update with some measurements for comparison once I get the upgrade done. For sensitive circuitry you’re often much better off using a capacitance multiplier.
My next layout will have less impedance in the power tracks there’s already a ground planeand I will increase decoupling after the regulators – there’s only about 30uF there right now because, mainly, of headroom problems but I’ll reassess that. Or will Murphy get me this time?

Here is a list of items shown in this video: On Feb 4, 3: That can cause some nasty noise peaks in the kHz range, depending on the size of the output capacitor and the amount of current being drawn. A new InTheMail video because mail items have been constantly coming in. Also, when I did the sums, I realised the ripple simply corresponds to about 1.
